Philadelphia Eagles News

3/21/2006

Jabar Gaffney is officially an Eagle, and he is a potent addition. Although his numbers were relatively quite in Houston, having a dud QB and O-line are more the reason than lack of big-number ability. Just check out what Merrill Reese has to say; he is extremely excited.

The Eagles signed Jeff Garcia, bringing their QB total to SIX. Way to many. Garcia is a great veteran QB and is slated to the No. 2 spot. As a result, today, McMahon and Andy Hall were let go.

Free Agency is reaching its calming point; fortunately, the Eagles have made their key additions. Shawn Barber is adding to the LB mix. Darren Howard will be a play maker at the defensive end position, playing opposite of the Phreak. Matt Schobel, standing 6 feet 5 inches, brings a big blocker with some endzone potential tight end abilities. Jabar Gaffney, according to Merrill, will be a great compliment to Reggie Brown and should be an exciting wide reciever. And Mr. Jeff Garcia gives Eagles fans the peace of mind of having a reliable backup QB. No more 6 interception 42-0 losses, hopefully.

Jabar Gaffney, the No. 2 reciever for the Texans, and a first pick of the second round in the 2004 draft, was signed to a one year deal with the Eagles. I didn't watch the Texans much in 2005, they stunked. Gaffney is fast and stands at 6 feet 1 inch, and 195 lbs. He should be a nice addition to a new WR core. How the Birds WR do is a mystery that only the 2006 season can resolve.

Jeff Garcia? He was decent for the Niners (with good 'ol TO), and then bounced around to Cleveland, Detriot, and currently he's visiting with Eagles personnel. He played well for Eagles QB coach Marty Mornhinweg, and may impress the team enough to get him a McNabb backup job. And EVERY Birds fan knows how desperately the Eagles need a backup. Both McMahon and Detmer combined couldn't make a half-decent QB. No word yet on Garcia's signing. So far, he's just visiting.

On March 13, 2006, the Eagles signed talented defensive end Darren Howard to a six year contract. Howard is 6 feet 3 inches, and 275 lbs. This brings much needed size and speed to the defensive end position. With Howard and Kearse on both ends, opposing offensives will not enjoy passing against this vicous D-end duo.

As a former Saint, Howard had two 11 sack seasons. He was so valuable, the Saints used the Franchise tag on him TWICE, in back to back seasons, 2004 and 2005. Why so valuable? He is a big guy with an aggresive and successful pass rush. Imagine a QB, say Mike Vick, seeing Kearse running towards him from the right, cleverly stepping to the left so a blocker can pick him up, only to step right into a bull-rushing Howard that bear hugs him to the ground. That's what we want to see, and I think we will.

Now for a little strategic insight. Corey Simon was 290 lbs. when he went to the Pro Bowl with the Eagles. Howard is 275 lbs. If needed, Howard can slide inside and play DT, and play it well. With Kearse, Darwin Walker, Howard, and Trent Cole on the line on a passing down, the pass rush will be exciting and effectively overwhelming for an offense to block. GO EAGLES!!!

Shawn Barber signed a one year contract with the Eagles. Note, Trotter left Philadelphia for a big contract in free agency. He had two horrible seasons in Washington before returning to the Eagles with a one year contract and a Pro Bowl season. Barber played for Philadelphia in 2002, had a great season, and used it to get a beefy contract through the free agency. Three years later, Barber returns to the Eagles on a one year contract. Feel what I'm saying?

SIX DAYS. The free agency has been postponed for SIX freakin days. Teams have taken this time to lighten up their salary roster. Redskins released LaVar Arringtion, freeing up a couple million. The Eagles need a line-backer, but I feel they're leaning towards bringing Shawn Barber back to the mix. Barber visited the Eagles and worked out today after being released by Kansas City on March 2nd. Barber played for the Eagles for one year and left for KC. Looks like Big man Andy has some tricks up his sleeve.

Last year, WR Reggie Brown said, "[my] goal is to start," but it will be a wait and see. I said, "I wouldn't mind seeing Stinkston warming Brown's bench while Brown is catching some of McNabb's bullets. GO EAGLES!" Well, looks like Reggie will be starting, and Stinkston will be warming Brown's bench. We'll see. GO EAGLES!"
